INDUSTRIES TO ENSURE APPROPRIATE AXLE LOAD CONTROL / LADEN WEIGHT FOR TRANSPORTATION OF THEIR GOODS BY VEHICLES / TRUCKS / TRAILERS SO THAT THE OVERLOADED HEAVY VEHICLES SHOULD NOT DAMAGE THE MOTORWAYS AND HIGHWAYS

Mr. Muhammad Hussain Shah, Director (Construction) Karachi, National Highway Authority called on Mr. Muhammad Jawed Bilwani, Coordinator, Karachi Industrial Forum (KIF) & Central Chairman, PHMA on Thursday, 24th January, 2019 at PHMA Office Karachi and apprised that the National Highway Authority under the ambit of Federal Ministry of Communication is making efforts to ensure heavy vehicles should carry approved weight only to avoid damages to roads. In this connection, NHA is approaching the Associations to request the member industries to restrict their transporters to transport their goods to up or down country routes via heavy vehicles as per approved and permissible laden weight to ensure compliance to Governments policy. The NHA Official informed that the heavy vehicles due to over loading and exceeding load beyond approved laden weights has been damaging the highways and motorways, particularly a lane of Karachi Hyderabad Motorway (M-9) has also damaged because of overloaded heavy vehicles and requested PHMA to advise the member industries to restrict their transporters to ensure compliance, accordingly.

Mr. Jawed Bilwani stressed upon the need to divert maximum load of goods carried in containers for transportation on railways to reduce the flow of heavy traffic in Karachi City and elsewhere on other upcountry destinations. He stated that the Government's approved goods carrying weight for heavy vehicles shall be shared with members for compliance of load / weight management. He urged the Highway Authority to reduce the toll (which was increased by the Government after renaming the N-5 Karachi to Hyderabad as Motorway M-9 after completion). He also urged that the heavy vehicles weight plying to upcountry should also be checked at the NHA Weighbridges before allowing vehicles to Motorways / Highways. He also gave suggestions to NHA for improvement of traffic flow at Lyari Expressway while introducing express e-passes to avoid long queues at the entry points. He also urged NHA to improve traffic flow while removing the bottleneck at the entry point of M-10 near ICI Bridge and repairing the expansion joints on two bridges over Lyari River at M-10. He also emphasized that the Southern Bypass should also be constructed in the national interest and the lanes of Northern bypass should also be doubled. He was also of the view that the Government should also consider to construct elevated link roads to connect the Karachi Ports (Container Terminals - KICT, PICT and SAPT) direct with the Highways and Motorways because currently all the gates of the Ports / Terminals open within the city due to which the heavy traffic cause severe congestion and traffic deadlocks.
